I was enjoying myself during the Songkran water fights when all of a sudden it hit me hard - all this clean water going to waste! We are living in a world with impending environmental disasters and are also faced with the depletion of our natural resources (which also refers to elements other than oil).

Yet, we continue to soak ourselves without putting much thought into the repercussions of our actions. Some of you might throw the whole “culture” issue, where this is something that has been going on for many years and because of culture, we can’t do without it. But we must remember, culture does evolve and saving water is key to sustainable development.

Here are some key facts about the future of WATER:

According to UN estimates over 1.2 billion people have no or limited access to drinking water.

That’s 20 % of the world’s total population – a proportion that accroding to the UN will increase to 1/3 by 2025.

100s of millions of Africans and 10s of millions of Latin Americans who now have water will be short of it in less than 20 years.

By 2050, more than 1 billion people in Asia could face water shortages.

By 2080, water shortages could threaten 1.1 to 3.2 billion people

Perhaps, in the future the authorities might think of holding a “Green Songkran” where people would be able to enjoy their water fights for a limited amount of time during the day.
